Butterfly Pattern

Easy Butterfly Cross Stitch Pattern

🦋 Butterfly Motif Chart – For Cross Stitch & Crochet - YARN

This delicate butterfly motif is designed as a compact 17x17 grid, making it ideal for small, decorative projects in both cross stitch and crochet.

In cross stitch, the filled squares (blue) can be stitched using full cross stitches, with optional backstitching to highlight the antennae or wing details. This design is perfect for embellishing bookmarks, greeting cards, hoop art, and framed samplers.

For crochet, especially tapestry or filet crochet, each square represents one block or stitch. You can use this motif as part of a lace doily, table runner, wall hanging, or baby blanket. Color changes can bring this butterfly to life, or you can work the design in a single color for a more classic, lacy effect.

The compact size makes it a great project for beginners who want to practice symmetry and pattern following, while also offering a satisfying, quick finish for advanced crafters.

Whether you're stitching it onto fabric or crocheting it into yarn, this butterfly brings an element of elegance and transformation to any handmade piece.

🦋 Crochet Butterfly Pattern

Step 1: Make the Wings
(Using Color A)

Round 1:

  • Ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring.
  • Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), work 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2 repeat from * to * 2 more times (total 4 sets of 3 dc clusters with ch-2 spaces).
  • Join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3.
(You should have 4 clusters – this will form the base for the wings.)

Round 2:

  • Sl st into next 2 stitches and into the ch-2 space.
  • In ch-2 space, [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] (this is a corner).
  • Repeat [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in each of the remaining 3 ch-2 spaces.
  • Join with sl st to the first dc. Fasten off. (You now have a granny square-like shape.)

Step 2: Fold the Butterfly

  • Fold the square in half diagonally, so it looks like a triangle.
  • Then fold again to form a "bowtie" or butterfly wing shape.

Step 3: Make the Body & Antennae
(Using Color B)

  • With contrasting YARN, wrap around the center of the folded shape several times to form the body and secure the wings in shape.
  • Ch 10 (or less, for smaller antennae). Fasten off.
  • Tie this chain at the center of the butterfly, with the two tails forming the antennae. Trim the ends.

This lovely cross-stitch artwork 'Girl with the Cat' depicts a peaceful and cozy indoor environment replete with warmth, nature, and quiet companionship. It depicts a young woman reclining comfortably in a nice location, surrounded by vivid houseplants and a cute kitten lying at her feet. The piece, rendered in delicate, colorful threads, evokes a moment of stillness and introspection, evoking a sense of serenity and comfort that draws the observer in.

At the heart of the design is the woman, who sits barefoot with her knees drawn close, dressed in relaxed blue pants and a rich purple top. Her long, flowing hair cascades around her face, and her peaceful expression suggests introspection or perhaps daydreaming. Her posture, gentle and inward, brings out a feeling of self-connection, solitude, and comfort in her own space.

A fluffy orange-and-white cat nestles warmly by her side, drawn with exquisite coloring and charm. The cat lends a comfortable, homey element to the overall picture, and its upward glance at the woman emphasizes the strong link that exists between pets and their humans. The cat's genuine texture and color depth, achieved by painstaking stitching, give it a focal point that adds to the overall warmth of the setting.
