Skill level: Beginner-friendly
Size: About 10–12 cm (adjustable with yarn & hook size)

Materials:

Abbreviations (US terms):

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • sk – skip stitch
  • st(s) – stitch(es)

Instructions

Body:

  1. Foundation: Ch 9.
  2. Round 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 4 ch, 3 dc in last ch. Working on the opposite side of chain, dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in last st. Join with sl st. (This makes an oval base.)
  3. Round 2: Ch 3, sk 1 st, dc in next st. Repeat around to create a lattice/mesh effect (fish “scales”). Adjust by skipping and chaining as needed to maintain oval shape. Join with sl st.
  4. Round 3 (optional): Repeat mesh row if you want a slightly larger body.

Tail:

  1. From the narrow end of the oval, attach yarn.
  2. Ch 4, dc in same st. Repeat into next 2 sts to form one triangle side of tail.
  3. On the opposite side, repeat Ch 4, dc in same st 3 times to form the other triangle.
  4. You now have a tail shaped like a “V.”

Finishing:

  • Add a small black stitch or sew a bead for the eye near the front.
  • Fasten off, weave in all ends.
